Glimpses regarding the future come right into focus in the Holyoke college region, the mini-melting pot for the community, where almost 1 / 2 of the approximately 600 students are Latino and about one-fourth of these are English-language learners.
At Holyoke Junior-Senior senior high school, instructor Allie Balog helps about 45 students adapt their fledgling English skills towards the scholastic setting. Most arrived from Mexico, but some are refugees from Honduras whom usually have endured an even more stressful path.
“This has opened my eyes to just just how life could be hard and just exactly what journeys individuals proceed through and just how kids are resilient, jump back and that can achieve success and head to university,” Balog says. “Kids in Holyoke, as a whole, are extremely accepting of every other.”
